Philippines
Background
The Republic of Philippines is ranked 9th in the 22 high burden countries that hold 80% of TB patients in the world. There are over 7,000 islands and the diverse living conditions, rapid urbanization in combination with economically deprived conditions have negatively affected the implementation of National TB Programs especially in urban settings in this country. Although the government of the Philippines achieved 100% DOTS coverage in 2003 and achieved 75/80 global target in 2007, there are still hot spots of the tuberculosis disease in close connection with poverty in urban poor settings in this country. Therefore, more focused program targeting such as minority group, urban poor community, people living in insecure areas, is needed.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Technical Support (1992-2007)
RIT/JATA supported the National TB Program for 15 years through JICA. It started a pilot project in Cebu province by building a TB reference laboratory and expanded to Luzon including the Metro Manila area. The main focus was to improve quality DOTS implementation including quality laboratory services.
